They're Baaaaack....

This made my week.  The lemon tree that was saved from death is now flowering.  I could sit and sniff these delicate blooms all day.  Welcome back, lemon tree.  I missed you.

Good morning, sunshine...

Sean brought me these tulips the other day, and they are making me crave springtime!  I like those flower arrangements that use bear grass or thick leaves to wrap around the stems, so I decided to give it a go with these.  I like less greens on the tulips anyway, so I usually take some leaves off...this time, I just ended up using the leaves I would usually toss....

Fiddle Leaf Fig Mourning

So, one of the trees that died en route to Boston last year was my fiddle leaf fig tree.  This was my absolute favorite house plant, especially with a can light behind it to illuminate the pretty leaves.  Down in GA, these would be sold at Home Depot for around $9.  $9!!!!  And they were a good size, very healthy...just perfect.  So, I have been searching for one here since we first arrived, and I have to say, the house plant selections at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.  are terrible here.  Why can't they carry a fiddle leaf fig??

Of course, one of my favorite shops, Portobello Road, carries them; however, they are out of my $9 price range.

I have scoured the internet, but being that I am a person who wants immediate satisfaction, I don't want to buy one of the little seedlings you can get online.  Hmmmm.  I wish I could road trip to GA to pick one up :)

Catherine and I are taking Paddy on his first trip to Ikea today, and we are also going to give Home Depot one more shot to come through on the fiddle leaf fig...my fingers are crossed...

*Updated 1/29/10 - I found a picture of my beloved old Fiddle Leaf.  RIP, FLF.

Fine Art of Flowers

Winston flowers makes me feel like I walked into paradise. I have never seen such beautiful flower design. The containers are of grand scale, the flowers are unique, lush, and impeccably arranged. I wish I could live in this store (put Winstons and Anthropologie together, and it would be paradise on steroids!). I wasn't sure if they would allow pictures, and I am too chicken to ask...so I snapped a few with my camera phone. Please pardon the quality, but hopefully it will give a sense of how amazing this place is.

This was my favorite pot - only $2000! I'll take two... :)

Oh, sweet succulents...makes me miss all my plants in GA. Hallie/Sommer/Brenda - you all know what I mean! Lately I have been craving an enormous succulent arrangement like one that I saw at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. mmmm.....
these shelves would be awesome storage for potting supplies...
such striking arrangements...
this makes me want to hang a chandelier in an outdoor living space.

love the log idea...I would take one of these tables too...
I wish I could have orchids in every room (and also have a good out of the way place to store them/allow them to stay alive when they aren't in bloom!)
i love birch wood (reminds me of the cottage). they have such fantastic displays.

Winterizing the Lemon Tree

Since one lemon tree has made a comeback (Sommer, it is the one you and Tim gave me!), we are going to be sure to bring him inside for the cold months. So, I may be a little early to be thinking about bringing him in, but I am not taking any chances this time! So, I am wanting a huge basket to stick the huge pot in. The one that I have my eye on is this extra large round one from Pottery Barn; however, I am having a hard time justifying this price ($129). I found one very similar to this around X-Mas time last year, but it was $330!! Why do baskets have to be so expensive??

Does anyone know of a good, more inexpensive basket source that might carry a big one like this?

Peonies

Growing up, we had endless peony bushes on the side of our house. I never had enough appreciation for those beautiful blooms. When we went to see the Sers in San Antonio, Sommer had the most beautiful peonies in our room.

First harvest...

Despite our TEENY porch/garden, our little plants have been champs despite all the ferocious wind up there, we just harvested our first butter lettuce and basil. We had BLT wraps last night, and tonight we will have pesto pasta. I am hoping for dinner alfresco, but the skies look like they are about to open up.

I miss my lemon trees

As a lot of you know, I was adamant that we move my lemon trees with us to Boston. I will make a long story short...we brought them, but they didn't make it. I have one little stalk that is trying to make a comeback, but that's it. I adored those trees. Tim and Sommer had one waiting for me on my front porch when I got home from dropping Sean off for his deployment. It was the best thing I could have seen at that point, besides Sean, of course. I bought a matching one, and they made LOTS of lemons.

It was incredible to me how much better they were than store bought lemons. They smelled so fresh and lemony as soon as you picked them off the tree just b/c they didn't have the waxy stuff on them. I got so many, I didn't know what to do with them...so this past year, we made our own limoncello.

I wish I liked to drink limoncello, but Randy, Brenda, and Sean have all enjoyed it :). It was fun to make and tend to.

When we were traveling last week, once we made it to the south, I thought...OH!!! I could buy lemon trees down here and bring them home with me! I was so excited. I called Lowes, but who knew...she said that they could not carry them due to some disease coming out of Florida. Looks like I might have to order them online after all.

Anyways, if you find yourself with an abundance of lemons...either from a tree, a farmers market where they are selling 7 for $1, or a centerpiece of fresh ones...think about making your own limoncello!

I wish you could smell these.

I forgot how much I love the following two flowers from the north...but the best part are the beautiful smells. I could sniff these suckers all day long. I wish I could let you smell these freshly picked ones over the blog ;)

Mother Nature

Sean, Glory and I went to the Arnold Arboretum yesterday and spent most of the day there. It was so gorgeous, fun and relaxing. Mother Nature really is amazing...

I love how Glory is smiling in this one...look closely :)

I love planting too early

Being as impatient as I am, I always buy plants too early. I spent most of the day going up and down all our flights of stairs in pursuit of getting some planting done in hopes of attempting a small "urban" garden up on our porch. There is no water source on the 3rd floor, so upkeep is going to be a blast. I have to figure out how to collect rain water up there so I am not lugging a watering can up there every day!

Planted so far:
--three types of lettuce
--two tomato plants
--LOTS of basil. I was in the mood for pesto
--thyme
--lavender (makes me happy to smell it)
--rosemary
--chives

Now...if I can just resurrect my one lemon tree that is trying to make a comeback!!

Maybe one day I will have my dream garden...once we are settled.
