More New England Architecture...

A few amazing houses that I have admired the whole time we have been here.  I finally snapped a few pics on a walk with my mom the other day...

if Cottage Living lived on, I would hope they would feature this adorable house.

I love the stone...

I am going to miss being able to walk by these exquisite homes every day!

Manga Manga Manga!

Lately, my favorite foods have been as follows....

Hummus - my new favorite recipe is from Ina Garten....love her.  I am hooked on hummus for lunch - either with pita bread or in a veggie wrap.  We also use this to make an appetizer that my turned us onto...spread the hummus on a platter/plate to serve from, and then top with feta crumbles, halved grape tomatoes and sliced black olives.  Yum.

Lemon Fusili with Arugala - another Ina specialty!  I know this may not sound very appealing at first, but trust me, it is delicous!  We add chicken, and enjoy it hot or cold!

Pork Tenderloin with Rosemary and Garlic - Hallie made this for me, and it goes down in history as the best pork tenderloin I have ever had.  It was cooked to perfection.  Because of the kiddos needing to get to bed, it sat for an hour before we ate it...we don't know if that extra time helped lock in all the flavor, or what, but regardless...super simple and absolutely delicious.

Polenta Fries with Parmesan Truffle dip - We had these at 51 Lincoln, and I have been thinking of them ever since.  They were the best part of our meal there.  I could only find the pre-made polenta at the store the other day, so I cut it up into wedges, sprayed with some olive oil, sprinkled some kosher salt on them, and baked for about 25 min at 375 - or until they start to turn golden brown.  They were a hit.  I am sure they would be super tasty if fried, but we just opted for the healthier version this time.

I botched the dip...I can't find the exact recipe I am looking for online, so I attempted one with sour cream, mayo, parm, and black truffle oil.  I think we needed a different oil - maybe white truffle?  I am not sure, but I am going to keep working on it.  Next time, I will try to use a base of creme fraiche, like this recipe, but the store was out of it this time.

Rum Coconut Lime Pie - Sean requested this for his bday - nice and refreshing for the warm weather.  The crust makes this one.  I can't remember where I found this one...but here is the recipe if you are interested...

Rum Coconut Key Lime Pie

1 8oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
½ cup lime juice
1 tsp. rum (optional)
coconut crust
1 tablespoon sweetened flaked coconut, toasted

-Beat cream cheese and milk with an electric mixer at medium speed, until smooth
-Add lime juice and if desired, rum, stirring to combine
-Pour filling into coconut crust
-Sprinkle evenly with coconut
-Cover and chill at least 12 hours or until set.

Coconut Crust
(makes 1  9 inch crust)

12-14 cream filled vanilla sandwich cookies, finely crushed (about 1.25 cups)
1 cup sweetened flake coconut, toasted
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

Combine all ingredients.  Firmly press on bottom and up sides of a 9 inch pie plate.

Cover and chill 30 minutes.

Weak Knees...

This is my favorite garden here in Newton.  The antique bed full of different mosses gives me weak knees.

have you ever seen a more vibrant pink azalea?

Cords, cords, everywhere.

Cords drive me absolutely bonkers.  Seriously.  And, at our current place, it is not up to code, so outlets are few and far between.  With all our wonderful technology, cords abound.  We have power strips and extension cords coming out our ears.  One of my goals for our next house will be to have the cords more under control.

I love this idea of using cute storage boxes and putting air holes in the back of them by Young House Love.  Very creative!

And this solution I read about on Door Sixteen - I think I might invest in a few of these from Ikea.

And Nicole from Making it Lovely used this solution.

How do you keep your cords at bay?  I would love to hear any ideas!!

Shopping at your own house.

I had the best week hanging out with Hallie.  We had been dreaming of cranking out all these crafts while we were together....being all prepared with materials ahead of time, produce cute shoes, barrettes for Nora, shirts for us...okay, none of that happened.

But...even better, we spent a lot of time during the week shopping around in her own house and changing around most of her downstairs.  She mentioned that she wanted some help with bookshelves...well, once she asked that, the floodgates opened.  Furniture started moving, books started flying, treasured items poured out of the woodwork, and we had an absolute blast.  I couldn't have imagined anything more fun, really.  They have so many meaningful pieces that they have collected in their travels or that have been passed down through the families, and it was so fun to learn about so many of the pieces and then seek a prominent and perfect place to display it.

Living Room Before...
Living Room After:

We moved the two matching chairs into the family room for additional seating in there.  We thought more chairs would be needed for the living room, but we really ended up liking it as is.  The upholstered chair was a treasure that she found when we were antiquing in Columbus, and it was fun to place it in a more prominent spot.  We broke down the books into fiction/non-fiction, and then arranged them on the beautiful bookshelves that Randy built for them.

They had such cool pieces, we tried to display them on the bookshelves wherever we could.

I adore the stirrups that David picked up in Korea.

And the elephants....oh, adorable elephants, I love thee.

I love this piece of Hallie's.  It was in this corner, and we just added some interesting candlesticks, a beautiful piece of art, and my favorite...her collection of unique rocks in a pedestal bowl she found on one of our shopping trips in Columbus.

I am envious of Hallie's green thumb.  She has found a spot with perfect light for all her little guys.  She found this great farm table in Columbus as well.  We put her leather stools under the table for additional seating when needed.

Kitchen - before:

 Kitchen - after:

Hallie plans to hang these stunning copper pots above the other set of cabinets....gorgeous!

In the kitchen, we really just found new homes for most of the glassware - see dining room pics - and cleaned stuff off the counter tops by making room in drawers.  Again, they have such pretty pieces it was fun to pick some out to be displayed on top of the cabinets.

Look at this beauty that Hallie's family picked up while living in Holland.  I would drink tea everyday if I had this!

These glasses, from Hallie's childhood, had been on top of the cabinet with all the other glassware/serving pieces.  They were only brought out for serving ginger ale when the girls were sick.  Those sweet glasses would definitely make me feel better...
Hallie did a masterful job cleaning off the counter tops to utilize drawer space for all her utensils.  Thanks to inspiration from Krissy, we picked up these bottles for olive oil and balsamic.  Everything is more fun to use when it looks pretty, don't you agree?

Dining Room - before:

Dining Room - after:

Hallie wanted a place to put all the glassware that resided on top of the kitchen cabinets.  We stole a bookshelf from upstairs and after Hallie's TLC and mounting brackets, it looks great and isn't going anywhere!!  I loved Hallie's idea to keep all the silver on a low shelf so her daughter could play with all their baby cups.  Genius.

Family Room - before:

Family Room - after:

These pieces were serving as nightstands in the master bedroom.  They are pretty tall next to their bed, so Hallie had mentioned wanting to get different bedside tables.  She put together a beautiful frame arrangement on this wall, and the tall pieces were PERFECT to compliment the frames and serve as an area to display more of their pretty pieces.

We added one of these pictures and the plant to the corner to pull it all together...You can see this corner at the back of the house when you come through the front door, and you can't go wrong with the greenery!

One of my very favorite pieces of Hallie's is this Vegas table.  Before it was tucked in the corner of the living room, so we were so happy to find this new home for it where it is prominently displayed!  She has also been on the hunt for a new rug.  She had this smaller rug by the back door, so to add some color to the main living area, we just layered the rugs for now.  It gives a nice pop of color.
I think this bookshelf is what started the whole week of house projects.  Hallie wanted some help with bookshelves, and that led us to go crazy with a plethora of changes.  What a blast...I am so honored that Hallie let me help her in this undertaking.

This is a little nook off the family room that leads to the Master bedroom.  Her daughter's toys had been in a clear Rubbermaid in the family room, so we organized the bookshelf to allow for space for these inexpensive crates from Target.  They assumed the role of holding toys in a disguised fashion.

For one final project, we reorganized the office a bit.

Office - before (Hallie had already hung the two pics before we started organizing) -

I mean, if I could just figure out how to come up with wireless EVERYTHING, I would be a billionaire.  Do all the cords associated to computers and all our wonderful tech gadgets not drive you crazy?  (there will be another post about this soon)  We tried our best to wrangle the cords and get them more out of the way since they are a big attraction for 9 month olds!  We then re-arranged the small shelf so that the contents are out of sight unless you are at the desk.  We found some fun things to put on the shelves and called it a day!

Hallie - thanks for the best week.  Paddy and I can't wait to hang out again.  I can't wait for you to be my master art installer when we move :)

Bacon Bourbon

For all of you who know a man who likes bacon and a stiff cocktail, you should consider making some of this Bacon Bourbon.  Sean happened upon a bourbon tasting for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, and he came home raving about bacon bourbon.  Today is Sean's bday, and I couldn't think of any better birthday gift than that!  So, yesterday, I went to talk to the shop owners to make sure I bought the correct bourbon and perfect bacon, and then got to work.

I watched this video several times yesterday while making the concoction.

Here is the gist of it if you are interested...

1.  Buy the supplies!  Having really good bacon is the key.  I bought double smoked bacon in a slab and had the butcher cut it for me.  The man at the liquor shop used a one litre bottle of Evan Williams bourbon for his, so I followed his lead.

2.  Cook the bacon VERY slowly.  2 hours was suggested to me.  Being as impatient as I am, I only cooked it for about 1.5 hours.  It is important to not burn the bacon.  I used ~8 pieces, following the suggestion I received.

3.  Dump the litre bottle of bourbon and the bacon fat into a container.  (I used about 2.5 oz. fat which is what my 8 slices produced, but the PDT instructions say to use 1 oz.)  Let it sit for 4 hours.

4.  After the 4 hours, place the mixture into the freezer.  This will allow the fat to solidify.
5.  After 2 hours, pour the mixture through a sieve with some coffee filters in it to act as a filter for the fat. (I probably should have filtered mine twice b/c I saw that a few tiny bits made it through the filter.)

 coffee filters in my sieve...

6.  Taste test!!

You can then use the bourbon to make a Benton's Old Fashioned - a drink served by PDT in NYC.

Benton's Old Fashioned
--2 oz. bacon bourbon
--1/2 oz. good maple syrup
--two dashes Angostura bitters

Pour over ice and stir.  PDT used one huge, perfect cube of ice.  I must find ice trays to make those (if anyone knows where to get this, I am all ears!)  Apparently the ice won't melt as quickly if it is one big cube??

Sean tried a teeny sample this morning (minus the bitters) and he said it was really good.  I wish I could stomach bourbon, but I am not that tough.

This was a fun project, and if we can perfect it, I think it would be a fun thing to keep around the house to serve when guests come by.

We will be venturing out for cocktails and some seafood at Neptune Oyster in the North End tonight.  Looking forward to date night!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEAN!  We love you.

Slade Drive - House Tour - Guest Bedrooms & Hallway

We didn't do much to our guest bedrooms...they definitely morphed over time; however, we didn't put too much effort in.

Front Guest Room - Before

Front Guest Room - After

Back Guest Room -
This room was used as a family room at first.  There were no blinds/window treatments on the big bank of windows and no door.  We decided to get white faux wood blinds and then we added a french door.  After we got that done, this became our primary guest room.

Hallway
My dad put crown moulding up for us, and I caulked/painted.  I then repainted the hallway to Ralph Lauren's Barn Owl White to freshen up the space a bit.  My dad also helped us install new light fixtures.

Done.

Sorry for the hiatus...I was a bad blogger while away.  So, we completed the Nashville half marathon.  We were slow, but we did it and were able to finish before the bad storm started.  Second half marathon, complete.

I decided that, from now on, if I sign up for any more long races, I would like to bring my phone and blog/text pictures throughout the entire race.  There were so many things that we were amused by during the race, and it seemed like it would make the race so much more bearable and fun.  My favorite sign read "Run like Elin Woods is chasing you"....perfect.

It was such a treat to spend the weekend with Randy, Brenda, Hallie, Nora and Phila.  Staying at Phila's is always such a luxury.  Great food, hospitality and company, as always.  Phila is around 85 years old and has more energy than I could ever dream to have.  If you are ever looking for an escape, you should go visit Phila at Hachland Hall Vineyard.  And you have to actually call her on the phone to make your reservation...authentic.  Go see her.  Phila makes everything better.  And ask for some fried chicken and fudge pie.

Slade Drive - House Tour - Dining Room

We mostly did paint work to the dining room.  My grandpa helped us repair and smooth over some cracks in the lower half of the wall, and later, we painted the upper half of the wall, with the help of my parents, before Sean came home for R&R in 2007 (Ralph Lauren Barn Owl White).

While Sean and I were up in Michigan on R&R, my wonderful friends moved our prized piece of furniture into the house (it only cleared the doorway by about 1/8"!) and arranged all my serving pieces beautifully inside of it.  It was a big surprise for Sean when we arrived home.  We were both speechless when we saw it.  It far exceeded any expectations that we had.  Randy brought the doors from my grandma's cottage back to life and built the beautiful piece around them that I had dreamed of.

I wanted the lighter walls so that they would set off our beautiful new piece.  We miss this piece so much.  As I mentioned before, it is in storage right now, and we can't wait to get it back at USMA.  If it doesn't fit in our house, it will go to the Crow Mansion, if they still need/want furniture :)

Favorite new crafting supply...

My favorite new crafting supply is baker's twine. I saw it a while ago at Mike's Pastry in the North End, and I wanted a similar set up in my house...twine that can be pulled from the ceiling, wrapped around cute boxes and torn with my hands. Love it.

I have noticed a lot of cute places are selling it now, but are charging more than I wanted to pay. I got mine here. It was only $8.95 and I will have it forever. I love that it will last so long b/c I am one of those people who hates to use up things that I love. Since there are 3400 yards, I am not worried. (Sidenote: Do you know what I mean about not wanting to use up things you love? One of my 2010 resolutions is to burn good candles more often...I fall into a trap of not wanting to burn them b/c I don't want them to be gone!)

I just used some of my twine for Laurie's shower next weekend. Now that all our guest visits are done, I can focus on shower details. I heart details, so I am happy...pics to come!

Alarm Clocks

Does anyone else have an issue with finding a cool looking alarm clock for your bedside table?  I have an ancient one for CDs (again, dating myself), and Sean has a weather station.  The weather station is actually very handy...I would just love the look of matching clocks.

I also love digital for a bedside clock, probably because I am so disoriented when I wake up.

I started perusing some sites this week for a good clock.  So, I am guessing many of you do this as well, but I seem to use Apartment Therapy as my starting point for most design related searches.  They have had posts about everything.  I just love it.

So, this is my favorite clock...however, it has a couple small issues...no alarm, no back light.  Admittedly, it does look a little cheap, but I am just loving the flip clock look right now.

Here is one that does have an alarm and is backlit...but I don't love it as much as the other one.
I just know how much I adore the Fliqlo screen saver that I have, so I thought the old school flip clock would be fun.  If I went with something more traditional, I think this one is pretty...but not digital :)

I swear, my tastes are all over this place.  Does that mean I have a problem? :)

New Diaper Bag

My parents got me this tote for my birthday, and I have the biggest crush on it.  I was having a hard time finding things in the Moop bag, so this is now the one I carry all the time.  Love it.  We were lucky enough to get 35% off, but even without that killer deal, I still think it is a great price!

Straight No Chaser

Sean and I went to see Straight No Chaser last night...they were amazing.  It is so much fun to see them, 10 years later, and better than ever.  Every time I hear them, so many IU memories come flooding back to me.  I remember how giddy we would get when we were stuffing our faces in the Alpha Chi dining room, and Straight No Chaser would surprise us with a few songs. (funny thing to note, AXO girls...we said hello to them after the show and they remember stuffing their faces at our house, too!! :)).  It was always the ultimate treat to be able to see them or have them sing at one of our functions.

They are such animated performers as well as incredibly talented singers.  It is hard for me to comprehend the kind of musical ability that they have.  I wouldn't even know where they begin to create the arrangements that they do.  They really blew us out of the water.

They just released a new album two days ago, you should check it out.  They are also going to be on Jimmy Fallon Friday night.  Set your DVRs!  Here was our favorite song...

Sommer's 30th Birthday

A couple of years ago, I hosted a party to celebrate Sommer's 30th birthday.  It was so much fun prepping for it.  I was an eBay fiend the month before the party, that is for sure.  We had a lot of fun at the party - even Sommer's mom was able to attend, all the way from Texas.

Onto the details...

The invitations...I wanted a cute picture of Sommer as a little girl so I enlisted Tim to help me.  It was so cute...he showed up at the door one day after work with some pictures that he had found...they were perfect!  I then assembled the three page invitation (vellum, photo, invitation details)...

The color scheme was red and black with silver accents. I threw together a table run from scraps of black fabric I had, and Brenda brought down lots of yummy smelling red candles.

The placecard tags -
to be tied onto bud vases with red roses...

Placemats...saw this in a magazine (can't remember which one)...just printed on 11x17 paper.

Menus...I liked the quote:
"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." - Virginia Woolf

Mini milkshakes - scored these little silver cups on eBay.  Filled them with yummy Hardee's chocolate shakes...still one of my favorites.

I made some CD mixes as favors (I know, I sound so 'old school', right?  Well, at least I didn't say 'tapes'...)
CD Jacket...

Destination Wedding Invitations...

I was so flattered that Ryan and Jamie asked me to create their wedding invitations.  Since they are planning an intimate, destination wedding (Maui, here we come!), we thought it would be fun to create a pretty little package for guests to receive.  Jamie has to be the most laid back bride I have ever known, and it is always fun working with Ryan...they basically gave me free creative license.  It was fun to dream up something that would be special and unique for two people that I love very much.

I can honestly think of few things more fun than putting a lot of heart and soul into a project when you are doing it for people that mean so much to you.

Enough babbling...here is the making of the invitations...

I ordered some starfish to be incorporated into the invitation...

I cut and ironed pieces of burlap that I had in my fabric bin...

I designed, printed, cut, and taped all the invitations, RSVP cards, additional information card and RSVP envelopes...

Labels to be used for the boxes...these are left over labels from my wedding!

You can never go wrong with grosgrain, in my opinion...

The invitation package...

Wish I would have more pics in natural light, but in typical Meghan fashion, much of this was late night work, including photos...

The jute and ribbon were tied in the back.  It is interesting how I just assumed people would slip the entire burlap/ribbon/jute cuff off the invitation, but Ryan said that one guest was commenting on how hard it was to untie the knots!

I used paper shred to serve as a cushion for the invitation/starfish..

I put some shred on top hoping to avoid broken starfish...

Label on the box (I used necklace boxes)...

Getting ready to wrap!  Thankfully, Sean lent a helping hand with some of the wrapping...

Each box was wrapped in shipping paper and a coordinating label was placed on the outside.

Ry & Jamie - it was such an honor to get to make these for you.  Can't wait for Maui!!

About

As a creative outlet, I joined the blogosphere.  I thought if I blogged about things I am interested in, maybe it would help me determine what to do with my life when I grow up.

I am married to my best friend and we have a sweet (for now) little boy and a cuddly black lab.  We are a military family and are enjoying seeing different parts of our country and hopefully the world.

Right now...I like all things paper, party, entertaining and design.  We will see where these interests lead me!
